Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

We had a fabulous, fun-filled exhausting week learning about Dr. Seuss.  Here are some of the highlights of what we did...and by the way, if I used one of your magnificent downloads, please let me know and I will give you credit (My hubby, who was trying to do a random act of kindness for me and clean up, accidentally threw away my list of where I got these centers.  I guess I can't be too upset with him).

I started the week by reading a book about the life of Dr. Seuss and we even watched an informational video on BrainPop Jr.  Then we charted what we learned.  Here is what my little cuties came up with:

Then, throughout the week we read about three different books written by Dr. Seuss each day and did some fun activities that went along with those books (many that I found while blog stalking).  Of course, I didn't remember to take the time to take pics of those activities.  Maybe one day I will get my act together (I just don't know how some of these awesome bloggers do it all!)

Anywho, pretty much the culmination of this unit was on Friday. Of course it started with our Principal getting on the news in the morning and announcing that it was "Read Across America Day."  Then the chaos fun began!  My mother-in-law, a retired kindergarten teacher, came in to read Green Eggs and Ham to my littles.  The student's were so attentive!  I am so proud!

Then we were off to complete our Seussical Center Work (That is what I titled our day of fun to enhance their interest!  Isn't it funny how you can give an activity an interesting title and then all the sudden it isn't classified as school work?)  Here are pics of our four stations:

Station # 1:  Seussical Sight Word Sentences-each child selected five Cat in the Hat Sight Words and wrote a sentence using each one of those words (I wished I had a cute recording sheet for them, but there just wasn't enough time to find one or make one...always room to improve next year.)

Station #2:  Spin-A-Sound-(found this download at Live, Love, and Laugh Everyday in Kindergarten)  The children spin their spinner, identify the beginning sound, then color in on their recording sheet. This one was a hit!!!

Station #3:  Build a Cat In The Hat-the children used pieces provided to construct a cat in the hat.  They just love selecting their own eye stickers from the roll (I got these from Oriental Trading.)

Station #4:  Seussical Word Sort-(also found at Live, Love, and Laugh Everyday in Kindergarten).  The children read the sight words and sort them according to how many letters are in the word. Then they write them down on their recording sheet.  This one came with a large number of sight words.  I just had them sort until the columns were full, except column one (one letter words).  I love the recording sheet provided with this one because it can be used with any sight word sort and isn't necessary just for Dr. Seuss.

After special area, we watched Green Eggs and Ham and then charted if they like them or not for Math.

I also made these yummy Cat in the Hat Cookies for my lovelies.  I had to make them slightly different from my normal way because I have one child that is allergic to several of the ingredients.  Normally I use a vanilla wafer on the bottom dipped in white chocolate, topped with a large marshmallow with each end dipped in white chocolate and red sprinkles.  They are really cute and yummy!  This year's version was enjoyed just as well, but not as cute in my opinion.

These were an adorable "Thank You" gift to all of our Read Across America readers.  They were made by one of our wonderful volunteers who should be on our payroll because she is pretty much there everyday!  Aren't they cute?

One more thing, during the day I took every child's photo using my iPad and a cool app that was found by another teacher at our school.  The app is called the Cat Cam.  It cost .99!  That's it!  It gives you many options for the backgrounds using several popular Dr. Seuss books and you can take and then insert the child's picture.  AWESOME!  This little cutie is one of my fellow teacher's son.  He is as sweet as he is cute!

Well, that's it!  What a birthday celebration!  I am sure you did some wonderful activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss.  I would love to hear about your ideas.

Happy Blogging!
Ann
